We’re Inspired By… Smita Netra

As the holidays near, we’re often reminded of the vibrant and wise women who came before. Our mothers, grandmothers, aunts, great grandmothers, and the generations of women who created the magic for us each year, the memories we’ll forever feel nostalgic for: The warmth of their homes, the familiar scents of the season, a delicious spread atop well-loved table linens, the comfort, and the chaos.

We’re mindful of the countless ways they influenced us, from our sense of style to our sense of humor. Lately, we’ve been reflecting on how they also inspired our sense of home. They taught us how to gather and host, shared traditions and passed down heirlooms, while nurturing us to cultivate our own.

At Birdie & Claire, you’ve likely noticed that we love mixing classic, timeless styles with fresh fabrics and modern design details. This is something we share in common with our friend Smita Netra. Smita is the founder and CEO of Banyan & Birch, a collection of ethically made, luxury home linens that seamlessly blend timeless artisan craftsmanship with designs for modern homes.

1. We’d love to hear the story behind founding Banyan & Birch. You’ve had quite the impressive career path from biotech engineering to textile designer. What inspired you to take this leap into a new direction?

"After going through stage four endometriosis and navigating a period between jobs, I remember I was strolling down Newbury Street in Boston with my husband during the 4th of July weekend in 2023. We spotted a clothing boutique and decided to step in. As I looked at the prints, I had this feeling, they looked like they were made in India. Sure enough, when we checked the tags, they were. But the owners had no real connection to India. That’s when my husband looked at me and said, “Why don’t you do this? Maybe start your own business.”

By the end of July, I had registered Banyan & Birch, and by the fall, around the end of October, we officially launched. It was a leap, but one that felt deeply connected to my roots, my love for Indian craftsmanship, and a desire to create something meaningful."

2. Banyan & Birch was created in part to honor India’s rich heritage in textiles and artisan craftsmanship, and your production process preserves traditional techniques like hand-block printing and weaving. What has been the most rewarding part of building the brand so far?

"The most rewarding part has been seeing our pieces in modern homes, loved by our customers, and even picked up by interior designers. It’s incredible to watch them transform spaces, bringing warmth and character, and knowing that the stories and craftsmanship behind each piece are being appreciated every day."

3. Have you always been drawn to design and home décor as a creative outlet, or did that passion emerge over time?

"Yes, I’ve loved design and home décor for as long as I can remember. Growing up, I was completely fascinated by my mom’s sarees. She had the most beautiful collection in silk, chiffon, and cotton, and I would spend hours just looking at the fabrics and the prints. She also loved picking out furniture and would spend days making sure every piece felt right. In fact, some of the custom furniture she chose is still in our home today. I was always drawn to textiles and design, but it’s only now that I’ve finally had the chance to turn that passion into what I do with Banyan & Birch."

4. When it comes to creating an inviting space to gather with friends and family, what are the key elements you focus on? Any favorite tips you’d like to share?

"When I think about creating a space where friends and family feel welcome, I focus on making it warm and inviting. Soft lighting is key, so I love using lamps to create gentle layers of light rather than harsh overheads, which I only use when absolutely necessary for cooking or cleaning. Beautiful textiles add comfort and character, and food, of course, makes everything feel homey. I also like to add a fresh arrangement of flowers, a scented candle, and some music to complete the mood. It’s all about creating a space that feels effortless, warm, and full of life."

5. Along with your keen eye for interiors, we've also noticed your impeccable personal style. What role does fashion play in your life?

"I think fashion plays a big role in my life. I love seeing what’s trending, though I’m definitely not a trend chaser. I focus on pieces that fit my personal style. I’m a bit of a sucker for long coats and make it a point to buy one every season, styling it in different ways. Most of my wardrobe is monochrome—blacks, navies, and whites—but I like adding a pop of color here and there, whether it’s through shoes, a bag, or a top.

My mom has also had a huge influence on how I approach style. She always told me that however you dress, it should look sharp and sophisticated. For me, that idea of sophistication guides my personal style. Of course, I also have a few playful pieces for days when I want to have a little fun with what I wear. Overall, fashion is a way for me to express myself thoughtfully while still enjoying the process."

6. Were there any women in your life who inspired you along the way, whether by shaping your love of interiors, passing down a favorite tradition, or influencing your sense of style?

"I think, obviously, my mom has been a huge influence. She’s one of the reasons I fell in love with fabrics and prints. I remember going shopping with her when I was little, whether for saris or just everyday shopping, and she would tell me, “No, no, no, this fabric isn’t good,” or “This one will last.” I started understanding from a very young age what makes a fabric feel special.

My maternal grandmother also played a big role. She had a beautiful home with a big veranda, eight or nine rooms, and a lovely garden full of bougainvilleas, roses, and daisies. Even though we had a gardener, she would personally make sure the flowers were cared for, planted properly, and thriving. That tradition of keeping plants and flowers in the home has really stayed with me, and I think it shows up in my work. I’m naturally drawn to creating floral prints because I find flowers so refreshing—they have this ability to bring life and warmth to a space."

7. What is an outfit that made you feel amazing? A memorable outfit, or your go-to ONE outfit that brings you the most confidence?

"I think my go-to outfit has to be a sari. I absolutely love wearing one. There’s something about the nine yards of fabric draped just right—it’s pure sophistication. I truly believe any woman, no matter her shape or size, can look like a queen in a sari.

For everyday wear, though, it depends on the season. In summer, I love a simple summer dress paired with golden hoop earrings. In fall, I go for comfy wide-legged pants, a nice pair of boots, and a well-fitted coat—sometimes printed, sometimes woolen. At the end of the day, no matter what you wear, I think confidence is everything. If you carry yourself well, you’ve already arrived."
